Children of The Dust
Sidney Poitier, Michael Moriarty, Joanna Going, Hart Bouchner, Regina Taylor, Billy Wirth, Robert Guillaume, Shirley Knight and Farrah Fawcett star in sweeping story of romance, racism and revenge set in the West of the 1880's.
Poitier plays Gypsy Smith, a half-Black, half-Cherokee gunslinger. He rescues a young Cheyenne lad from an Indian massacre and takes him to John Maxwell (Moriarty), head of the Indian Agency on the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation. Maxwell raises the boy over the objections of his white wife Nora (Fawcett) and names him Corby White.
As Corby, (Wirth) matures, he develops a passionate attachment with Maxwell's daughter Rachel (Going). When Maxwell discovers that Rachel and Corby are lovers he sends his daugher away to school. Corby feeling angry and betrayed, returns to his people. Rachel later rushes into an unhappy marriage with Shelby Harnbeck (Bochner), a wealthy southern aristocrat with secret ties to the Ku Klux Klan.
Gypsy is persuaded by a leading black politician (Guillaume) to lead a wagon train of former slaves from Tennessee to start new lives in the Oklahoma Territory. Among the hopeful settlers is Druscilla (Taylor) a young teacher who captures Gypsy's heart. The pioneer's name their new home Freedom and they elect Gypsy town marshal.
Gypsy's attempt to keep the peace is shattered when two innocent young black boys are falsely accused of raping a young white girl. The Klan burns out the settlers and lynches the boys. Gypsey is mutilated by Hornbeck and left for dead. Nursed back to health by Maxwell, Gypsy breaks off his relationship with Druscilla and begins a quest for revenge. When Rachel discovers her husband's involvement in Gypsy's tragedy she is swept into a fateful course of violence. Gypsy, Corby and Rachel become desperate fugitives, hunted by vengeful authorities as they make a run for their lives.
