Director Billy Wirth Goes One to One with Fan Mary Jo

THE QUESTION:

MJ: "Because the process of film making is a collaborative effort, and because this film meant so much to you on a personal level, was it ever difficult for you to surrender your vision of the film, to the interpretation of others that worked with you on this project?"

BW: Whew! "That is a great question."

BW: You know my vision evolved as we went along, and I really tired to serve the people, the actors, and Tyrone's original story.

I didn't really think in terms of the circumstances or a vision and I wanted to handle it without being judgmental.

I guess my vision was not to really have a vision or to have a preconceived idea on where I wanted, other than truthfully and delicately create an environment for the actors t bring what they could.

When I thought they got lost or their character didn't fit I would step in and talk to them and discuss. I would not tell them they had to do something .I wantedI tried to make it collaboration for them and the project

A vision I guess was to see Tyrone, all the actors, and me in Sundance, and if we got there we had made a good movie. So that was the vision.

As for the piece, I kept learning more and more and still learn more when I watch it again and again. I wanted it to tell a story.

THE MESSAGE:The message is not to give up and keep hope alive. If someone wanted help to be there for them, but you can't help them if they don't want it. And in the end of this story Cody and his son found it. Which was great.

Thanks Mary Jo, and tell your friend to "Break A Leg"....
