Sundance Steeped in Premieres
Hollywood Reporter
Wed. Dec. 6, 2000 By Kirk Honeycutt (edited)

Promising the broadest range of programming in the history of the Sundance Film Festival, its officials have selected 106 feature films to present at its 2001 edition, down about a half-dozen features from last year.

Of the 106 features to screen at the festival, which runs Jan. 18-28 in the cozy ski resort of Park City, Utah, 65 will be world premieres, 21 U.S. premieres and 8 North American premieres.

While co-director Geoffrey Gilmore sees no overriding trends or themes coming out of the 2001 selections, he does note two unique circumstances in this year's schedule: Animation, rarely seen in Park City, will be featured in no less than four programs.

Writer-driven films steer 2001
Hollywood Reporter Tues. Dec. 5, 2000

A pair of outre musicals, a 1970's update on Shakespeare's "MacBeth", several intimate family dramas, two black stories and four films developed in the Sundance Filmmakers Labs are among the 16 films entered in the dramatic competition for the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.

The documentary competition slate, which also numbers 16 films, ranges from the tragic tale of abandoned children on the streets of Bucharest, Romania, to two films abut key 20th century black figures, Marcus Garvey and Ralph Bunche.

Geoffrey Gilmore said the 32 competition films were winnowed from a list of submitted films that numbered 854 in the dramatic category and 390 in the documentary competition.

There submissions are up from last year's totals of 849 features and 347 documentaries.

Gilmore suggested that these indies are all "writer-driven pieces," films that attracted actors and funding because of the screenplay itself.

DRAMATIC COMPETITION:

"American Astronaut" is a campy musical set in outer space. The film is by Sundance lab alum Cory McAbee, who has had shorts in the festival as well as having appeared in Park City with his band, the Billy Nayer Show.

"The Believer" by veteran screenwriter Henry Bean, stars Billy Zane and Teresa Russell and concerns a young Jewish man who turns against his faith and becomes a neo-Nazi.

"The Business of Strangers" by Patrick Stettner and starring Stockard Channing concerns a businesswoman and her young female assistant stuck in an airport hotel.

"The Deep End" by Scott McGehee and David Siegel concerns a mother, "Orlando's" Tilda Swinton, who hides the body of her gay son's dead lover. A film version of Elizabeth S. Holding's novel "The Blank Wall" was made by Max Ophuls as "The Reckless Moment" in 1949.

"Donnie Darko," directed by Richard Kelly and produced by Drew Barrymore, concerns a teenager(Jake Gyllenhaal of "October Sky"), who must slip through a time portal to save those he loves.

"Green Dragon" by Timothy Linh Bui, is set in California in 1975 in a Vietnamese refugee camp on the Marine base at Camp Pendleton. Timothy and his brother Tony switch their "Three Seasons" roles with Timothy directing and his brother producing. Stars Forest Whitaker and Patrick Swayze.

"Hedwig and the Angry Inch," written and directed by and starring John Cameron Mitchell, is based on his off-Broadway musical about a rock 'n' roll songstress from Communist East Berlin who has undergone an unsuccessful sex change operation. New Line is the distributor.

"In the Bedroom," by actor Todd Field, stars Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei and explores a family torn apart by a tragedy.

"L.I.E." -- meaning the Long Island Expressway -- is Michael Cuesta's film about the strange relationship between an adolescent boy and an older man (Brian Cox) with sexual overtones.

"Lift," directed by Boston filmmakers DeMane Davis and Khari Streeter ("Black and White and Red All Over"), stars Lonetta McGee as a woman trying to mend fences with her daughter, a professional shoplifter.

"MacArthur Park," directed by Billy Wirth, concerns a homeless crack addict living in L.A.'s MacArthur Park who is confronted by the son he abandoned five years before.

"Memento" by Christopher Nolan, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Guy Pearce as a man suffering from incurable memory loss who must devise a way to track down his wife's killer.

"Scotland, PA," directed by Billy Morrissette, sets "MacBeth" in a 1970s Pennsylvania fast-food restaurant.

Christopher Munch's "The Sleepy Time Gal" stars Jacqueline Bisset as a woman facing death who longs to reconnect with the daughter she put up for adoption at birth.

"Some Body" a digitally shot feature by Henry Barrial, concerns a woman who leaves a tedious relationship for sexual adventure.

"30 Years to Life," directed by Vanessa Middleton, is black ensemble comedy about six friends in New York during the 12-month period before their 30th birthdays.
